Toal crowned "King of the Road"

Last weekend saw the annual King and Queen of the Road competition in Ballincullig Co.Cork. After an excellent weekend of bowling the two Armagh throwers, Mickey Toal and Susan Cullen took home the main silverware of the weekend.

Toal Reigns Supreme
On the Saturday, Toal faced what was expected to be a tough opponent in Kieran Gould, and thats exactly how it turned out with both men matching each other shot for shot. But in the end it was Toal who triumphed winning by nearly a full bowl of odds.
In the other semi-final, tournament favourite Bill Daly was up against Philip O'Donovan. After a tense finale O'Donovan showed great steel to win through to a final berth with the Armagh man.
In the final itself, reigning all-Ireland champion Toal had a relatively easy win over O'Donovan by over 2 shots to claim his second King of the Road title, his and Armaghs first coming back in 1997.

The next major national tournament to take place will be the Bol Fada staged by the Keady-Tassagh club. No doubt another spectacular weekend of bowls is in line with top throwers from each county, Armagh and Cork, taking part. This will take place over the Easter weekend on the Blaney road.

Turkey Tournament

Sunday saw the completion of the Turkey Tournament on a cold Madden Road. In the section A Mickey Rafferty partnered the legendary Jimmy Greene to a comprehensive 3 shot win over Glen McKenna and Stevie Gray.

Meanwhile in the section B Johnny Moore and Barry O'Reilly had a good 3 shot victory over the two Johns, Kiernan and Maguire. This capped a fine tournament for Moore and O'Reilly who have steadily improved after a shaky start in the first round.
